Activities of Partitioning and Transmutation Technology Division


Partitioning and Transmutation (P&T) technology is the combination of technologies to partition various nuclides included in high level waste into several groups and to transmute long-lived nuclides to short-lived or stable ones. The purpose of the P&T technology is the mitigation of the burden for the geological disposal of the nuclear waste. It is considered that the time which the harmfulness of the nuclear waste decreases to the natural uranium level may shorten one-thousandth by the installation of the P&T technology. For the transmutation, two transmutation systems are supposed mainly; one is a fast reactor and the other is an accelerator-driven system (ADS).

Partitioning and Transmutation Technology Division has addressed R&Ds for the partitioning of minor actinides (MAs) from the nuclear waste, the transmutation technology by the ADS and the reprocessing of spent fuels discharge from the ADS.
